Bathroom makeovers can either be a really great and fun experience, or they can be a nightmare. It really depends on you and how you go about your bathroom plans.
The first thing you have to decide when planning a bathroom makeover is whether or not you are going to completely redesign your bathroom from the floor up - replacing the flooring, the toilet, tub and sink - or if you’re going for a simpler redesign by focusing on your bathroom decorations.
There are a number of software programs available that will help you with actual floor plans and deciding how much material you will need if your are gutting the bathroom and starting from the floor up. But I’ve always found with a project like this - it’s just as simple to head down to your local Home Depot or Lowes with the dimensions of your bathroom. The staff at these local hardware stores are always more than happy to help you with that aspect of your planning - and they have all the software and know how that you will need.
If you are going to gut your bathroom and do a complete redesign - it’s best to plan it all out in the beginning. The more you plan out before you start - the less headaches you’ll end up with. Things to consider:
- Will you be doing the work yourself, or will you hire somebody else?
- What is your budget? And how much room are you leaving yourself with it?
- What is the time frame you would like to work within?
- What is the overall look and feel you are going to be shooting for?
Plan out all of the details. You might not think picking out a shower curtain is that important in the overall scheme of things - but if you’re going for a particular look and feel, you want to make sure that all of the materials that you want to use in the finished product are available and fit in your budget. You don’t want to get to the end and realize that something you had planned on isn’t available.
That being said - be prepared to be flexible. With big projects, something is always going to come up. But that’s why you plan out in the beginning - because you should also have contingency plans ready just in case something isn’t working out like you planned.
With bathroom makeovers - the most important step is always the one before a single tile is cut, or a screw is turned. If you give yourself a plan - you’ll always know exactly where you are at, and what you need to do to finish on time, and within budget.
